Getting Started
Use keyboard shortcuts and the command palette
Get around the web app, create things and act on what is open, without reaching for the mouse.
The web app has keyboard shortcuts for moving between pages, creating things and acting on what you have open, and a command palette that finds any page, list or note by name.
On a Mac, shortcuts use ⌘ (Command). On Windows and Linux, press Ctrl instead. This article gives both, as in ⌘K / Ctrl+K, and the app shows the keys for your computer.
Open the command palette
Press ⌘K / Ctrl+K anywhere in the app to open the command palette, then start typing to find what you need. Use ↑ and ↓ to move through the results, and Enter to choose one. To close the palette, press ⌘K / Ctrl+K again, or Esc.
The palette lists:
- Navigation — Today, Tasks, Notes, Lists and Settings.
- Jump to — Your lists and your notes, by name. Archived ones aren't listed.
- Commands — New task, New note and New list; Help centre, which opens in a new tab; and the shortcuts that work everywhere: Keyboard shortcuts, Toggle sidebar, and Focus search on pages with a search box.
The palette doesn't search your tasks. To find a task, use the search box on Tasks — press / to jump to it.
See the shortcut list
Press ? to open Keyboard shortcuts, which lists the shortcuts you can use where you are, under General, Navigation and Current page. You can also open it from the command palette.
Shortcuts that work everywhere
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| ⌘K / Ctrl+K | Open or close the command palette |
| ? | Show the keyboard shortcuts |
| ⌘B / Ctrl+B | Collapse or expand the sidebar |
| / | Jump to the search box, on pages that have one |
Go to a page
Press G, then the page's key within a second:
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| G then T | Go to Today |
| G then K | Go to Tasks |
| G then N | Go to Notes |
| G then L | Go to Lists |
| G then S | Open Settings |
The shortcut list also shows G then J for Journal, which is coming soon to the web app.
Shortcuts on Today
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| C | Create a task |
| P | Start or finish planning |
| [ | Go to the previous week |
| ] | Go to the next week |
| T | Go back to today |
Shortcuts on Tasks, Notes and Lists
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| C | Create a task on Tasks, a note on Notes, or a list on Lists |
| ⌘⌫ / Ctrl+Backspace | On a list's page with no panel open, delete the list, if you own it |
Shortcuts in a task, note or list panel
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| ⌘↵ / Ctrl+Enter | Save the task or list you're editing |
| E | Edit the note you're reading |
| ⌘⌫ / Ctrl+Backspace | Delete the task or note |
| Esc | Close the panel. If you're editing a note, it stops editing first |
With two panels open, these act on the one you're in. You're always asked to confirm before anything is deleted.
While you're typing
Single-key shortcuts, such as C, ? or G then T, don't work while you're typing in a field, or while a dialog or menu is open, so they never get in the way of your words. Shortcuts with ⌘ or Ctrl, such as ⌘↵ / Ctrl+Enter to save, still work while you type — except ⌘⌫ / Ctrl+Backspace, which keeps its usual meaning in a text field.
