Tasks

Organise tasks with subtasks

Break tasks into smaller steps using subtasks, and learn how completing or moving a parent task affects its children.

What are subtasks?

Subtasks let you break a larger task into smaller, manageable steps. Each subtask is a task in its own right — it can have its own due date, reminders, tags, and other details — but it lives underneath a parent task.

Adding subtasks

  1. Tap a task to open it.
  2. Tap Add subtask.
  3. Enter a title for the subtask and tap Save.
  4. Repeat to add as many subtasks as you need.

You can tap any subtask to open it and add further details such as due dates, reminders, or tags.

Completing subtasks

Tap the circle next to a subtask to mark it as done, just like any other task. Subtasks can be completed independently of their parent.

Cascade behaviour

Parent tasks and their subtasks are linked. Certain actions on the parent automatically cascade to all subtasks:

  • Completing the parent — Marks all open subtasks as done.
  • Moving the parent to a different list — Moves all subtasks to the same list.
  • Deleting the parent — Deletes all subtasks as well.

Be mindful when deleting a parent task — all its subtasks will be permanently removed too.

Viewing subtasks

When browsing your tasks, subtasks appear nested underneath their parent. The parent task shows a count of how many subtasks are completed out of the total, so you can track progress at a glance.

Tips for using subtasks

  • Break down complex tasks — If a task feels too big to tackle in one go, split it into subtasks. Each step becomes its own completable item.
  • Use for checklists — Subtasks work well for things like packing lists, meeting agendas, or multi-step processes where you want to tick items off as you go.
  • Keep it shallow — Subtasks are one level deep. If you find yourself wanting sub-subtasks, consider creating a separate list instead.
